Avertin is used for long term immobilization of mice for imaging studies conducted in the Contag Lab.

STOCK Solution

In 20mL glass vial, dissolve 10g of 2,2,2-tribromoethanol (99%) with 10mL of tert-amyl alcohol. Store at room temperature wrapped in foil in a glass jar for up to 6 months.

5mL aliquots of WORKING SOLUTION

Add 1 mL of stock solution to 39mL of PBS. Add this in dropwise with constant stirring in PBS that is warmed to 37 centigrade. Avoid formation of crystals in the final solution as this will cause death in mice via intestinal necrosis. Aliquot and store protected from light at 4 degrees centigrade.

Anesthesia Instructions

Inject 250-300uL per 10 grams of mouse body weight IP. After about 1 minute, mouse will be immobilized and will remain so for about half an hour.
